7 Ingredients To Stay Away From In Your "Natural" Regimen

Natural, chemical-free skincare products are becoming mainstream because we are more aware that what we put on our skin affects our health. Did you know that 60% of what we apply to our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream? That's why it's so important to know what is going in.

Some of these "natural" products, aren't always what they seem, because let's face it, clever marketing can make anyone believe anything. Some chemicals found even in so called "natural" products can disrupt hormones and fertility, expose you to known cancer-causing pesticides, and release dangerous toxins. So when purchasing your skincare products, make sure to look out for these "stay away" from ingredients.

1. BHA/BHT

Used mainly in moisturizers and makeup as preservatives, BHA and BHT are considered likely carcinogens. In studies, animals exposed high doses to these chemicals developed stomach cancer and liver damage, and developed problems with their thyroid and reproductive organs. Although there aren't high doses of these compounds in most skin products, little is known about their cumulative effects over time.

2. Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives

Formaldehyde harms the brain, interferes with growth and development in children, and can induce asthma. These preservatives slowly release formaldehyde to keep the skin care product from spoiling and can sometimes  trigger allergic reactions on the skin. Look out for DMDM Hydantoin (very common), diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, and quaternium-15 in the ingredients list.

3. Oxybenzone

Found in sunscreens because it absorbs UV light. In humans, this chemical can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

4. Parabens

Also known as Methylparaben, Propylparaben, IIsoparaben, Butylparaben. Parabens are a group of chemicals used as preservatives and linked to possible carcinogenicity, as well as an estrogenic effect from after continued use. of. These chemicals can be found in face, body moisturizers, body wash, and cleansers.

5. Fragrance or Perfume

Some artificial fragrances are made from petroleum or coal which can cause skin irritations. Cosmetic fragrance is made with synthetic chemicals that mimic the scents found in nature.  Why not use the real thing? Because it's more expensive.

6. Siloxanes or Methicones

These soften and smooth skin but can also disrupt the action of certain hormones, and negatively influence fertility and libido.

7. Sodium Lauryl (Laureth) Sulfate

Found in most shampoos, soaps, and cleansers. Could contain 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen, and ethylene oxide, a chemical known to harm your nervous system.
